With regard to Tim Tebow: Why the CFL doesn’t need another NFL reject

Tim Tebow is a nice guy — that’s not the issue.

Surely the 25-year-old quarterback would be a great fit in a stereotypical Canadian market where people would praise him for his polite demeanor and glowing smile. Ideally, Tebow would be a fan favourite without ever touching a football and perhaps that’s the CFL’s exact thought process.

As the failed New York Jets quarterback experiment seems to be coming to an end, Tebow may be in the market for another team and it’s been reported the Montreal Alouettes are in possession his CFL negotiating rights should he choose to make the trek up north.

Assuming no other NFL team takes a shot at him and he’s willing to take a significant enough pay cut, Tebow could be headed to the CFL in a move that would generate all kinds of unprecedented media attention from both sides of the border.

Of course, if Tebow did decide to take his (debatable) talents to the CFL, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a struggling but relatively popular NFL player has fled the U.S. for Canada.

Remember Ricky Williams?

Yeah, Ricky Williams, the former Heisman Trophy winner who was suspended by the NFL for the entire 2006 season for his love of marijuana. Despite all the controversy and an angry Joe Theismann, he was still a big hit with the Toronto Argonauts and was vocal about how much he enjoyed his time in the CFL.

How about Pacman Jones?

In August 2009, Jones agreed to a one-year deal in principle with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before he was involved in a moronic internet video where he called the CFL the United Football League among other stupid comments.

Though it’s probably safe to say Tebow doesn’t share many personality traits in common with Williams or Jones, the bottom line is he’s still a distraction.

If it’s strictly publicity they’re after then bringing Tebow to the CFL is by all means a brilliant idea but if the goal is to keep the league moving forward and creating a product that’s somewhat unique from our southern neighbours then maybe some reconsideration is in order.

The reality is most starting quarterbacks currently in the CFL are better than Tebow and the only reason people are even interested in the guy doesn’t have as much to do with his playing ability as it does “Tebowing” or the virginity guessing game.

Bringing Tebow to the CFL would do virtually nothing for the quality of the game itself and it might actually be detrimental if anything. Let’s be honest, he’s still young but the guy hasn’t proven himself as a consistent starting quarterback since his Florida Gator days.

Just because we’re Canadian and our league’s smaller, we’re supposed to let that slide?

People need to stop getting excited for NFL players who can’t make it in their own league and instead focus on the great talent that’s being produced in house. When the day finally comes that the NFL makes its way to Toronto — we can talk about it to death.

Until then, Tim Tebow has no business playing football in Canada.
